In the Tenth Symphony Shostakovich unleashes his fury against Stalin in a violent, demonic musical battle with pitches equivalent to the initials of his name, D-S-C-H, pounded out like a code that crushes the tyrant in the wild, triumphant finale. Raising the curtain is the OPO premiere of a thrilling new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning Cuban-American composer Tania León, whose music is “infused with a vigorous pluralism” ( ~ The New York Times ). Dr. Phillips Center Presents in Association with AEG Presents The Temptations & The Four Tops March 9, 2023 THE TEMPTATIONS For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world. “The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater.” The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, many of which...”My Girl,” for instance...attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby;,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain”...the hits kept coming. THE FOUR TOPS The quartet, originally called the Four Aims, made their first single for Chess in 1956, and spent seven years on the road and in nightclubs, singing pop, blues, Broadway, but mostly jazz—four-part harmony jazz. When Motown’s Berry Gordy Jr. found out they had hustled a national “Tonight Show” appearance, he signed them without an audition to be the marquee act for the company’s Workshop Jazz label. That proved short-lived, and Stubbs’ powerhouse baritone lead and the exquisite harmonies of Fakir, Benson, and Payton started making one smash after another with the writing-producing trio Holland-Dozier-Holland. Their first Motown hit, “Baby I Need Your Loving” in 1964, made them stars and their sixties track record on the label is indispensable to any retrospective of the decade. Their songs, soulful and bittersweet, were across-the-board successes. “I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch),” a no. 1 R&B and Pop smash in 1965, is one of Motown’s longest-running chart toppers; it was quickly followed by a longtime favorite, “It’s The Same Old Song” (no. 2 R&B/no. 5 pop). Their commercial peak was highlighted by a romantic trilogy: the no. 1 “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” “Standing In The Shadows Of Love” (no. 2 R&B/no. 6 pop) and “Bernadette” (no. 3 R&B/no. 4 pop)—an extraordinary run of instant H-D-H classics. Other Tops hits from the decade included “Ask The Lonely,” “Shake Me, Wake Me (When It’s Over),” “Something About You,” “You Keep Running Away,” “7-Rooms Of Gloom” and their covers of “Walk Away Renee” and “If I Were A Carpenter.” The group was also extraordinarily popular in the U.K. Dr. Phillips Center Presents Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY March 10 & 11, 2023 The producers of Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY are proud to present a new orchestra concert experience: FINAL FANTASY 35th Anniversary Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY Coral . Enjoy this family-friendly tale about Marie, the eponymous “daughter” of the regiment. She was orphaned as an infant, but miraculously adopted and raised by a French army regiment not knowing of her noble birthright. The military life suits Marie just fine until she falls for the handsome peasant Tonio. Love-struck for Marie, Tonio must join the regiment to be near her, and prove his worth to her army of “fathers.” To further complicate matters Marie is whisked away from the regiment by the Marquise of Birkenfeld who knows of her aristocratic lineage and wants to introduce her properly to society. Of course, this upends the regimental order of things, and Marie must then choose between marrying for love or rejecting love and her found family to maintain her social status. It’s a show of equal parts comedy, romance, and vocal fireworks led by stage director Andrew Nienaber and featuring the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Johsua Horsch . Internationally-acclaimed Puerto Rican soprano Camille Ortiz makes her Opera Orlando debut in the title role of Marie, and she is joined by Orlando native and Metropolitan Opera National Competition winner Carlos Enrique Santelli who takes on the role of Tonio and the famous aria “Ah mes amis…” with no less than 9 high C’s. Dr. Phillips Center Presents in Association with AEG Presents Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox Life in the Past Lane Tour April 24, 2023 When New York City pianist Scott Bradlee created Postmodern Jukebox out of a basement in Queens in 2011, his goal was simple: to remake the pop hits of today into the classic sounds of the legends of yesterday. Miley Cyrus became The Platters. Bruno Mars became Frank Sinatra. The Spice Girls became The Andrews Sisters. Guns ’n’ Roses became Bessie Smith. Now, nearly a decade later, Postmodern Jukebox has grown to become a pop culture mainstay in its own right, having played over a thousand shows on six continents worldwide — including acclaimed venues like Radio City Music Hall, Sydney Opera House, and Red Rocks Amphitheater. In the process, PMJ has introduced audience to many of the world’s greatest singers, dancers, and instrumentalist — many of whom have gone on to become stars in their own right. Dr. Phillips Center Presents in Association with AEG Presents Steve Martin & Martin Short You Won't Believe What They Look Like Today! with very special guests Jeff Babko and The Steep Canyon Rangers April 29, 2023 Steve Martin and Martin Short’s “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” is a show that redefines the form in unexpected and profound ways, from two of the funniest, most influential and acclaimed talents of the past century. Their humor is often subversive, but it is always a joyous self-deprecating romp from two comedy masters driven to make each other laugh as much as the audience. The jokes come at you at a rapid-fire pace with little set-up and big punch lines as they mock Hollywood and the fickle nature of celebrity, but the comedy truly soars when they lovingly (and relentlessly) roast each other. Martin and Short’s chemistry and timing on stage reflects a friendship forged over three decades which developed when they met for the first time on the set of the 1986 film “Three Amigos.” These two titans of comedy have been touring together since 2015, when they launched their first live show entitled “A Very Stupid Conversation.” Dr. Phillips Center Presents Bluey’s Big Play May 6 & 7, 202 The #1 kids show on Disney Junior and Disney Channel comes to Orlando. But there’s also raw, intense music and the manic Rondo-Finale that brings this orchestral tour de force to its climax. Love was also in the air in Mendelssohn’s First Piano Concerto, dedicated to an object of his youthful affection. Inon Barnatan (“One of the most admired pianists of his generation” ~ New York Times) is the soloist for this sometimes brilliant, sometimes gossamer, but always romantic, work.
