Following last night's fire at Disneyland in California, where the Maleficent prop in the west coast's version of Fantasmic went up in flames, today, Sunday April 23, Disney have issued a statement regarding Walt Disney World Resort's Maleficent at the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom that uses a similar pyrotechnic effect.
Disney issued the following statement:
"During the final showing of Fantasmic at Disneyland park on Saturday evening, the dragon prop caught fire. Anaheim Fire & Rescue quickly responded, and the fire was extinguished. All cast members were safelv evacuated from Tom SawyerIsland. Due to smoke and wind, attractions near the Island were safely evacuated of any guests, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time. We are temporarily suspending fire effects similar to those used at Disneyland park's Fantasmic at select shows and entertainment experiences
globally out of an abundance of caution following the Fantasmic prop fire at Disneyland park. The continued safety of our cast and quests is of the utmost importance.”
This means that until further notice, there will be no fire effects on the Maleficent Dragon Float in the Magic Kingdom's Festival of Fantasy Parade.
Additionally, in good news for Watt Disney World, there will be no changes to the Fantasmic show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which uses a different prop type, and utilizes a different pyrotechnic effect to the one found in Disneyland.
It's interesting to note that the Maleficent float that usually breathes fire periodically during the Festival Of Fantasy parade at Magic Kingdom, caught fire back in 2018, in a very similar incident to the one last night at Disneyland that saw Adventureland at Disneyland evacuated as the Maleficent prop caught fire during the second performance of Fantasmic!
