Walt Disney World receives final ‘Yes’ vote to bring Affordable Housing to Central Florida!

Disney has received final approval from the Orange County Board of County Commissioners to move forward with plans to bring a new affordable housing community to Central Florida.

Disney first announced plans to set aside nearly 80 acres of its land for affordable housing in 2022. Since then, Disney has worked in lockstep with Orange County and a developer on a thoughtful plan to help contribute to the solution of the affordable housing crisis.

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners voted 5-1 in favor of the development, and as a next step the developer will work toward groundbreaking.

The development will be located on land west of State Road 429, just a few miles away from the Magic Kingdom, near schools and shopping, including Flamingo Crossings Town Center.

Disney commented, "Like other communities across the country, we know there are so many people and families throughout Central Florida in need of more affordable housing, and today’s vote is an important step forward in our efforts to contribute to the solution.”

Walt Disney World is developing the new housing community in collaboration with renowned developer, The Michaels Organization. Te project will be a mixed-income housing development that will have around 1,369 units total, including more than 1,000 units reserved for affordable housing.

The planned development will be based in the Horizon West area on Hartzog Road in Orange County, just a few miles away from the Magic Kingdom, near schools and shopping, including Flamingo Crossings Town Center.

The new plans call for a mix of building designs that fit seamlessly with neighboring villages in Horizon West. The development’s three entrances are designed to welcome the community in, allowing for easier traffic flow and offering safe paths for pedestrians and bikers. These paths are planned to connect the development, creating efficient ways to reach parks, gathering spaces and trails along the natural wetland.

The development is not government funded, and Disney are pointing out that they will not benefit financially from this development.

This development seeks to serve those the Central Florida community depends on every day, like teachers, police officers, grocery store employees, hospitality workers and more. All those who qualify may apply to live in this community; it is not solely for Disney cast members.

In addition to contributing around 80 acres of developable land to make this community possible, Disney has identified a separate 3-acre site on Disney-owned land that could be used for a fire station site, which would address a critical public infrastructure need in the area.

The developer is also planning to build a 2-acre community park, which will be open for anyone to enjoy.
