Walt Disney World issues first official statement as Milton develops into a hurricane

Walt Disney World has issued its first official statement on the rapidly growing concerns for a major hurricane bringing severe weather to Central Florida on Wednesday, October 9.

Tropical Storm Milton formed on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 6, and has rapidly intensify into a hurricane today, October 7, and is expected to make landfall on Florida near Tampa Bay on Wednesday, Oct. 9 as a major category 3 or higher hurricane.

The storm is forecast to bring the risk of life-threatening impacts to the west coast of Florida, with the potential to tear through the I-4 corridor including Orlando.

As residents and visitors are being urged to ready their hurricane preparedness kit and plan now, Walt Disney World has already started making operational plans behind the scenes.

On Saturday evening, the resort paused hotel reservations for Wednesday, Oct. 9 and Thursday, October 10, and earlier today the resort blocked reservations for Wednesday, Oct. 9 at all of the four Walt Disney World theme parks, which will likely lead to Walt Disney World closing its theme parks on Wednesday, if the forecast path of the storm remains as it is now.

As Milton officially becomes a hurricane, Walt Disney World has issued its first public ststement on the growing concerns for the weather situation in Central Florida in the days ahead.

The resort has commented that, "Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating under normal conditions. We are closely monitoring the path of the projected storm as we continue to prioritize the safety of our Guests and Cast Members."

While no restrictions have been officially announced for Walt Disney World, resort officials are closely monitoring the storm, and guests can expect updates in the hours and days ahead.

Milton's latest path has the hurricane tracking south of Tampa, but it is still expected to rip into Florida as a major Category 3, or possibly 4 hurricane, bringing damaging winds, life-threatening storm surge and torrential rain.

Here in Central Florida, current models show strong to damaging winds, flooding and tornadoes affecting the entire area, including the tourist areas of Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, International Drive and more.

Well in advance of the storm, waves of heavy rain have already started to affect Central and South Florida.
