A State of Emergency has been declared for 54 counties in Florida, including Orange, Osceola, and Seminole. If you are in one of these counties, pay close attention to Invest 97L and any possible changes in the coming hours.
The National Hurricane Center is continuing to monitor a well-defined tropical wave over the Greater Antilles this morning, Friday, August 2, as it threatens to cause severe weather for Florida in the coming days.
A well-defined tropical wave is producing a large area of poorly organized showers and thunderstorms over eastern Cuba, Hispaniola, the southeastern Bahamas, and Jamaica, as well as the adjacent waters of the southwestern Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea.
The wave is expected to move near or over Cuba throughout the day and then emerge over the Straits of Florida tonight or Saturday. Environmental conditions are expected to be conducive for additional development after that time, and a tropical depression is likely to form this weekend over the Straits of Florida or eastern Gulf of Mexico near the Florida Peninsula, with the possibility of it strengthening into Tropical Storm Debby.
The tropical wave currently has a 90% chance of tropical development, with the biggest impacts expected to be rainfall.
Tropical storm watches or warnings could be required for portions of Florida later today.
Ahead of any weather impacts for Florida, Gov. DeSantis has declared a State of Emergency for 54 counties in Florida, including Orange, Osceola, and Seminole, warning residents and visitors to pay close attention to Invest 97L and any possible changes in the coming hours.
Regardless of development, heavy rains could cause areas of flash flooding across Florida, with Central Florida forecast to expect impacts to be felt throughout Sunday, August 4.
10 inches of rain are expected to fall in some locations casuing flooding, together with possible tornadoes, and wind gusts between 45 and 60 mph, which could lead to scattered power outages.
It is still too early to predict the exact chances of impacts in the coming days, but it is time for everyone in the Florida to stay weather aware for updates on the tropics.
