Step into a world of childhood nostalgia at Orlando Museum of Art with Golden Legacy: Original Art from 80 Years of Golden Books

The museum's latest exhibition showcases over sixty original illustrations from the Random House archives, featuring timeless classics like The Poky Little Puppy, Tootle, Home for a Bunny, The Color Kittens, I Can Fly, and so many more!

This enchanting exhibition is organized by The National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, Abilene, Texas.

On view from September 6 - December 1, 2024.

Launched in 1942—the first full year of America’s involvement in the Second World War—Little Golden Books made high quality illustrated books available at affordable prices for the first time to millions of young children and their parents.

Among the artists who contributed to the ambitious series were greats of the European émigré community (including Garth Williams, Feodor Rojankovsky, and Tibor Gergely) who had gathered in New York as the European situation worsened; alumni of the Walt Disney Studios (including Gustaf Tenggren, Martin Provensen, J. P. Miller, and Mary Blair); and such American originals as Leonard Weisgard, Eloise Wilkin, Elizabeth Orton Jones, Richard Scarry, and Hilary Knight.

Also for families, on October 5, join OMA for a day filled with family fun as they celebrate the art of Little Golden Books! This FREE Family Day features hands-on art and gallery activities, storytelling, and music! Listen as musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra perform a Symphony Storytime@OMA concert of the book The Poky Little Puppy by Janette Sebring Lowrey, illustrated by Gustaf Tenggren. A City of Orlando fire truck will on-site from 11 am – 1 pm.

Family Days are always free for the whole family. Sponsored by The Williams Family.
