Right now if you are planning on flying SouthWest Airlines today, the chances are you will be severely delayed.
All Southwest Airlines flights have been grounded nationwide for hours, due to what Southwest have called a 'computer glitch' and although flights are once again resuming, the knock on effect following more than 1500 flights being grounded are going to be huge.
Here in Orlando, Orlando international Airport are advising anyone due to fly with Southwest to communicate with your airline for specific details regarding your flight.
This mornings chaos comes after a similar system outage that affected the airline just four months ago that saw more than 16,000 flights cancelled.
The airline had said that operations were paused this morning shortly after 9 am, with a huge total of 1500 flights delayed as of 10.45 am.
Southwest Airlines requested that the Federal Aviation Administration pause the airline’s departures earlier this morning, but have now requested that the pause be lifted, with flights now clear to resume.
The Federal Aviation Administration issued the following update at 11.10 am:
"Southwest Airlines experienced a technical issue with one of their internal systems. At the airline’s request, the FAA paused Southwest’s departures as they resolved the issue. The pause has been lifted and their service has resumed."
At 11.20 am Southwest Airlines issued the following travel advisory:
"We’ve resumed operations this morning following a pause in service. Please visit online to check your flight status and explore self-service options as we work to restore operations and accommodate disrupted Customers as quickly as possible."
Southwest have advised customers holding reservations to/from any Southwest destination today, April 18, that they can rebook in the original class of service or travel standby without paying any additional charge.
Customers who purchased their itinerary via Southwest.com or our mobile app are eligible to reschedule their travel plans online or from their mobile device.
Customers who did not purchase a ticket via Southwest.com can call 1-800-435-9792 to speak with a Customer Representative.
Customers in the U.S. scheduled to travel internationally must call 1-800-435-9792 to speak with a Customer Representative for assistance with rebooking.
