Big changes are coming to the once thriving Seminole Towne Center, including the addition of the big-box wholesale club retail store, Costco.
Big news from Sanford as the Seminole Towne Center mall is to close by the end of this month, with the now almost empty mall beginning a major redevelopment within six months, with the aim of bringing back customers to what was once a thriving shopping destination.
Seminole Towne Center which first opened to the public in 1995 has informed its remaining tenants that they only have until January 31 to close up shop and leave the mall.
Major anchor tenants are not included in the closure, with Elev8, JC Penney, Dillards, and Dicks Sporting Goods all remaining open for business while the redevelopment of Seminole Towne Center gets underway.
News of the closure comes from City of Sanford officials who have given an update on the future of the mall.
It was believed that Seminole Towne Center was to be sold to the Gilbane Company, with the deal going through on January 15, but this is not now the case, with city officials revealing that additional capital investors are now involved, and the sale is now expected to be accomplished in the "coming months."
City officials say that it is a condition of the sale that the current smaller tenants in the mall close, with the city pledging support to the small businesses involved, offering assistance to assist them in finding and relocating to new permanent locations.
The redevelopment of the mall will see much of the mall demolished, with the addition of top tier retail, multiple hotels/restaurants, a significant recreation footprint, and a residential component the City has previously approved.
The level of new business interest on the retail and entertainment front continues to grow. More recent announcements include: California Pizza Kitchen, a Guy Fieri concept, and a boutique movie theater concept. Plus, according to Wesh 2, Costco will be opening a store within the new look Seminole Towne Center.
