Potential Hurricane Helene: Central Florida School, College and University Closures and Updates

Tropical Storm Helene is expected to become a major hurricane in the coming days, and as the massive storm inches closer to Florida, we will keep you updated with Central Florida school closures and updates.


Potential Hurricane Helene is rapidly intensifying into a major Category 3 Hurricane as it continues to target Florida, much of the state is forecast to experience severe weather, which is expected to cause disruption to schools and college schedules throughout Central Florida.


Currently, schools and colleges are making plans to prepare for the worst of the weather, and we will keep you up to date with all the latest closures and updates from the schools, colleges, and universities throughout Central lorida.



Here is a list of School Closures and Updates County-by-County


OCPS district leadership is continuing to monitor and track Tropical Storm Helene. Based on this evening’s forecast, schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 and all after-school activities must end by 6 p.m. tomorrow, Sept. 25.


Any decision to close schools on Friday will be determined by the impact on Orange County and the timing of the storm.



Due to the anticipated effects of Tropical Storm Helene in our area, Seminole County Public Schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024 for students.


There will be no extracurricular activities, sporting events, or other school-based activities. This also includes KidZone & Beyond and 21st Century childcare services.


Seminole County Public Schools will monitor the weather and evaluate campus conditions after the significant effects of the storm pass. At this time, they anticipate school being in session on Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, however, we will notify our families if there are any changes to this schedule.”



Osceola School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Shanoff is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Helene in the Gulf of Mexico, and, in consultation with emergency management professionals and county leaders, has made the following decisions:


Wednesday, September 25, 2024

School will be held as normal. All school activities and events will also proceed as normal, including after-school activities and programs, Extended Day/Learning Program, and athletics.


Thursday, September 26, 2024

All schools and district offices will be closed. Employees will not report to work unless deemed essential by their supervisor (i.e. Maintenance Department).


The district will closely monitor the impacts of the weather system, relying on local public works directors, power companies, and Toho Water Authority, before making any decisions about Friday, September 27, which is already a non-student day/teacher professional study day.


Parents and community residents are encouraged to monitor the district's website at www.osceolaschools.net for any further school district updates.



Tropical Storm Helene is expected to hit Florida as a major hurricane with a possibility of strong wind gusts, tornadoes and localized flooding in Lake County on Thursday, Sept. 26. As advised by Lake County Florida Emergency Management, Lake County schools and district offices will be closed on Thursday. After-school activities on Wednesday, Sept. 25, will continue as planned.


Lake County Schools will continue to monitor the storm, and will determine a plan for schools for Friday, Sept. 27.


Sumter District Schools will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26 and Friday. Sept. 27. 


The school district will share any other school cancelations on its website, or will communicate via its call out system, school signs and social media.



Due to Tropical Storm Helene, VCS will cancel all after-school activities, except for Extended Day Enrichment Programs, on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Schools and district offices will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 26. Friday's operations, including after-school programs, remain unchanged at this time.


Brevard Public Schools is closely monitoring Tropical Storm Helene. No decision has been made on school closures, at this time.


A decision will be made by noon tomorrow, Wednesday, 9/25. Notification of any school closure will be provided to families with ample time to prepare. The district will continue to work collaboratively with Brevard County Emergency Operations and other local agencies to monitor the storm’s progress and determine the best course of action for the safety of our students, staff, and families


No school closures have been announced.


Marion County Public Schools will close Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, because of Tropical Storm Helene.


The decision comes after multiple meetings with Marion County Emergency Management and local governmental entities. All extra-curricular activities for Thursday are also canceled.


West Port High School will open as a special needs shelter on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Members of the general community may seek shelter beginning at 4 p.m. West Port High will also serve as the only pet shelter as of now.


MCPS will continue monitoring Tropical Storm Helene and consulting with Marion County Emergency Management to determine plans for Friday. Once decided, those plans will be shared via Skylert messaging and social media.



 In anticipation of Tropical Storm Helene, UCF will suspend campus operations and all classes, including online classes, on Thursday, Sept. 26.


Standard operations will continue through 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, and are planned to resume at 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2. More information at http://ucf.edu/hurricane.


FAMU has announced its closure ahead of Tropical Weather System. FAMU will be closed Wednesday, Sept. 24 through Friday, Sept. 27. Classes have been canceled through Friday.


Florida A&M University (FAMU) is monitoring the potentially dangerous tropical weather system that could bring severe weather conditions to the Florida Panhandle later this week.



FSU main campus will be closed beginning 7 am, Sept. 25 due to Tropical Storm Helene.


Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus will close on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2024, and will continue until 11pm Sunday, Sept. 29. The university expects to resume normal business operations at 12:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 30, 2024.


For those who wish to remain on campus, Tallahassee campus housing operations will continue throughout the closure. Students who elect to stay on campus and in the community should follow the guidance of local officials and plan for possible power outages in the area, including on campus. Students should prepare now and make provisions to potentially be indoors all day Thursday. Students should refer to an email sent by Student Affairs on Monday about how to prepare for the storm.


Dining operations will continue for residential students when safe to do so, though an alternate schedule will be implemented during the closure.
