Orlando visitor numbers continue to fall as hotel occupancy is down for third straight month

Orange County Comptroller Phil Diamond has announced that Tourist Development Tax collections received by Orange County is down once again, making this three months in a row that visitor numbers are down in Orlando.

For the June 2023 period, the county collected $30,028,300. That is a 7.3% decrease compared to June 2022 when the county collected $32,360,400.

In Orange County, a 6% resort tax is imposed on all lodgings, with the taxes raised going towards projects that contribute to tourism revenue, and tourism advertising via Visit Orlando.

In June, occupancy at area hotels was 74%, down -4.3% year-over-year. The Average Daily Rate for June 2023 was $185, slightly down from May 2023 which was $186.

Following very promising visitor numbers at the start of the year including an all-time high in March, visitors to Orlando have been on the slide ever since.

Visit Orlando are attributing the drop in revenue to summer heat and competition from other tourism destinations.

In better news, Visit Orlando say that for group business, June saw the highest ever monthly citywide attendance recorded at the Orange County Convention Center, with the AAU Volleyball Championships accounting for the largest share with more than 200,000 attendees. Premiere Orlando and Infocomm International also contributed with strong attendance.
