The Orlando Museum of Art (OMA) has two new exhibitions coming this month as the museum expands its offerings to engage a wider audience. OMA brings together artwork that will inspire everyone – from children on their first field trip to adults looking for new perspectives.

Relationships: A Love for Collecting tells the story of Dr. James Cottrell, an esteemed anesthesiologist and professor, and Mr. Joseph Lovett, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, who have been collecting art together for more than 40 years. Their collection featured more than 500 works, 314 of which were donated to the Orlando Museum of Art in 2024 as a gift to mark the museum’s centennial year. This exhibition marks the third major exhibition of the Cottrell-Lovett collection at OMA and the first installment of the transformational gift.

The Inverted Sound of Painting is a solo exhibition featuring the work of French American artist Edouard Prulhière, made possible through the generous donation of 34 pieces by Cottrell and Lovett to the museum last year. The works highlight a transformative period in Prulhière's career (1995-2005), that led him to radically rethink his practice and put aside traditional canvas painting.

He sought to transform his canvases into dynamic pieces that blurred the line between painting and sculpture – folding, crumpling, tearing, and cutting canvases while painting them, before rolling them up and screwing them onto their own reconstructed stretcher. For Prulhière, this rejection of the painting as a two-dimensional object to be hung on a wall opened a source of possibilities and propelled his artistic research onto new territories.

Before the exhibition even opens, Prulhière will be treating museum goers to a live mural painting in the gallery that will take place over the course of three days. Prulhière will also be presenting a free public lecture on January 25 at 1 pm.

In addition to the exhibitions opening January 25, Material World: Transcending the Object in Collage and Assemblage Works from the Permanent Collection is now open to the public.

This exhibition presents the work of artists who transcend the inherent nature and everyday reality of common objects, through their exploration of materiality. From a hospital gurney reimagined as an artwork stretcher to everyday textiles transformed into paintings and sculpture, from painted canvas repurposed as fabric to delicate paper sculptures, the works on view invite a closer look. Employing practices such as collage, assemblage, juxtaposition, pairing, and the accumulation of similar or disparate elements, these artists breathe new life into their chosen disciplines, materials, and objects.

“OMA’s mission is to present innovative programming that authentically reflects the experiences of people from all backgrounds,” said Cathryn Mattson, CEO of the Orlando Museum of Art. "We take pride in honoring groundbreaking and diverse artists, while highlighting the stories that connect us all. These new exhibitions do just that.”
