An Orlando convention dedicated to all things Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and A Song of Ice and Fire has been called by organizers.
Seven Hells, they're NOT coming back for more!
After a few years absence, Con of Thrones, a convention celebrating Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire, House of the Dragon, and the fantasy worlds of George R. R. Martin was due to return to Orlando for the fourth time this summer, only now its been cancelled.
Con of Thrones Orlando was due to take place on August 25 – 27, 2023 at the Hyatt Regency Orlando.
Organizers made the cancelation announcement on their social media accounts, blaming the cancellation of Con of Thrones 2023, due to what the call "the increasingly anti-humanitarian legislation and atmosphere in Florida."
They claim the convention has been called off based on feedback from partners, attendees, and guests.
They commented "It has become clear that if we were to proceed, Con of Thrones 2023 would not be the level of event that the community expects and deserves."
While organizers say that the event was cancelled due to Gov. DeSantis recent wave of anti LGBTQ+ legislation, it could have been cancelled simply because the event was suffering from poor ticket sales.
Many on social media have commented on the conventions social media accounts on the cancellation, claiming that the event had a poor lineup of celebrities, the tickets were too expensive, and that there was very little to do at the convention.
If the event has been cancelled due to Gov. DeSantis and his anti-gay stance, it could spell the start of more events following suit and either cancelling events, or not organizing events in the state at all.
Only time will tell...
All ticket purchasers will receive an email soon with transfer or refund options for any event tickets and add-on experiences they have purchased.
