It's finally happening, the Publix store in the Packing District is opening soon, and it will feature a unique mural inspired by the history of the area.
Dr. Phillips Charities, the community builder behind the $700-million Packing District project, announced back in September 2021 that Publix was to open a 27,512 square foot supermarket s in the Packing District, located at the northeast corner of Princeton Street and Orange Blossom Trail, and finally we have an opening date, with the store officially opening on February 22,
The supermarket which sits behind the newly opened replica Dr Phillips Juice Stand, which is home to Ravenous Pig Brewery, Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream, and Foxtail Coffee, sits on the same location as the original Dr. Phillips packing house and will feature traditional grocery, dairy and frozen food departments along with a full-service bakery, deli, pharmacy, seafood, meat and a fresh produce department.
To celebrate the historical significance of the area, Publix have commissioned Orlando based artist, Christian Stanley to create three murals celebrating the history of the Packing District.
The first mural is now compete, located in the area above the entrance to the new Publix, and can be easily viewed from the parking lot.
The beautiful mural highlights the local citrus industry, depicting local orange groves, with freshly picked citrus in packing boxes waiting to be delivered around the world.
The mural will be illuminated in the evening hours, which will really make it shine! Two further murals are planned for the building and will be ready for the February 22 opening.
The Packing District is a 202-acre transformational project centered at the intersection of Princeton Street and Orange Blossom Trail in Orlando, preserving the history of the area while providing a vibrant base of living and commerce.
Historic buildings are being repurposed, integrated with new uses, and connected to dedicated public spaces by a new and bold plan for urban trails and a new 100-acre public park (gifted to the City of Orlando) dedicated to health and wellness, education, arts and community, and sustainability.
Preparations first began to ready the site for construction in 2018, with the project continuing to mature over the next 10-15 years.
