Take a deep dive into the history of three of Florida's most famous residents.

Zora Neale Hurston

What do Zora Neale Hurston, Bob Ross, and John Young have in common? They all called Central Florida home! Learn about these famous Floridians and the impact they had not only on Central Florida but on the world.


History Alive: Famous Floridians takes place at Orange County Regional History Center on Saturday, March 1, 2025, 10 am - 5 -m, and features family-friendly activities and guided tours.


Activities include:


Zora Neale Hurston Typewriter – Try your hand at writing a poem the old-fashioned way on this vintage typewriter! Take inspiration from Zora Neale Hurston’s Harlem Renaissance writings or put your own spin on it.


Bob Ross Paintings – Use oil pastels to create your own artwork inspired by the style of Bob Ross. Will you recreate Rock Springs, Cocoa Beach, or a place from your imagination? Remember: There are no mistakes, only happy accidents!


John Young Space Explorers – John Young was a famous astronaut who walked on the moon and grew up right here in Orlando! Test your zero gravity skills using NASA boxes designed to mimic real astronaut training.


Guided tours: 10:30 am, Noon, 1:45 pm, 3:30 pm.

With deep roots in Orange County, the History Center opened in 2000 and is operated by Orange County and the nonprofit Historical Society of Central Florida, Inc.


The History Center is located in the restored 1927 courthouse at Magnolia Avenue and Central Boulevard in the heart of downtown Orlando. Parking is available in the Library Parking Garage at 112 E. Central Blvd. across from the Orlando Public Library.
