As Tropical Storm Idalia continues on a track towards Florida, the National Hurricane Center have upgraded the storm to a major Category 3 Hurricane, with warnings issued throughout Central Florida.
As we continue to monitor Tropical Storm Idalia, the storm continues to intensify and is now forecast to be a major hurricane over the eastern Gulf of Mexico Tuesday/Wednesday before making landfall between Tampa Bay and the Big Bend area sometime late Tuesday into early Wednesday.
Currently Idalia is still considered a tropical storm, but it is forecast to become a hurricane later today, Monday. The National Hurricane Center say that as the storm continues on its probable collision course with Florida, Idalia will bring life-threatening storm surges and dangerous winds to parts of Florida.
The latest track from the National Hurricane Center as of 5 am, Monday, has Idalia moving further to the east and closer to Central Florida, increasing the potential wind threat across east central Florida.
As it appears more likely that Central Florida will be impacted by this storm, more warnings have been issued for the area, with a hurricane watch in effect for Sumter and Marion counties, and a tropical storm watch in effect for Lake, Polk, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties until further notice.
The tropical storm watch includes the major tourism areas including Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, and International Drive.
Remember, watches are issued when conditions are expected within 48 hours and slight track shifts can greatly increase potential impacts.
So what conditions can we expect in Central Florida?
Strong to potentially damaging wind gusts, especially in squalls, along with heavy rainfall, will be the greatest impacts for east central Florida, with conditions beginning to deteriorate Tuesday afternoon.
A few tornadoes will be possible Tuesday/Wednesday.
Rsesidents should monitor updates to the forecast of this system and ensure that they have their hurricane plan in place now.
