Earlier today we reported that the National Hurricane Center is keeping a close eye on a tropical disturbance that is set to enter the Gulf of Mexico, potentially impacting Florida next week, and now Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has directed the Florida Division of Emergency Management to prepare for the potential tropical system to impact the state next week.

The governor has also asked that residents should remain vigilant and prepare for possible impacts early next week.

The National Hurricane Center are tracking the weather disturbance over the northwestern Caribbean Sea, where there is is a broad area of low pressure just off the northeastern coast of Honduras, producing disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity.

Conditions appear conducive for gradual development of this system during the next several days, and a tropical depression is likely to form late this weekend or early next week while moving generally northward over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Early today the NHC said that the system had a 70 percent chance of becoming a depression or storm within seven days, with Florida a potential area where severe weather impacts could be experienced.

In the latest 2 pm update, chances have increased to 80% that a tropical depression forms early next week and enters the SE Gulf of Mexico.

Although right now it is far to early to know the intensity or track of this system, or the impact, if any, here in Florida, now is a good time to check your plans in case you need to enact them. You can find advice here.
