The Galaxy Spin Roller Coaster at Fun Spot America in Kissimmee had been closed follwing an incident on Thursday, August 3, 2023.
It has been confirmed by The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services that the spinning coaster, Galaxy Spin at the popular Fun Spot America attraction, located next to Old Town on West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway has been cleared to reopen following an incident on August 3, that resulted in a 6 year old child being transported to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for treatment.
Units from the Osceola County Fire Rescue and EMS responded to the incident, finding the child under the track of The Galaxy Spin Roller Coaster. In a statement at the time they commented, "Units arrived to find a 6-year-old with traumatic injuries under the rollercoaster track which was approximately 20 feet above."
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services commented at the time that the coaster would remain closed pending the outcome of an investigation.
In a statement the family owned park re-assured the public that the ride would not re-open until it was sure such an incident will not happen again. "The safety of our guests is our number one priority."
Now following the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services investigation, it was found that the ride was in normal operating condition with no mechanical issues, and was being operated in accordance with all ride safety requirements and the manufacturer’s operations manual.
Only in an abundance of caution, the department is now requiring that any child under the age of 10 on this ride must be accompanied by a supervising companion at least age 14 or older. The department is also requiring additional safety messaging and signage in and around the ride.
The Galaxy Spin Roller Coaster at Fun Spot was build by Zamperla. The Twister Coaster / 420STD is the world's best-selling full-sized spinning coaster model, and has been in production since 2005.
You will find over 30 identical models of the coaster operating at amusement parks and theme parks around the world, including Cedar Point and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom.
The Galaxy Spin Coaster first opened at Legoland Florida as Rockstar in 2011, before being relocated to Fun Spot in Kissimmee.
