Hurricane Debby made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida earlier today as a Category 1 Hurricane, with Central Florida experiencing heavy rain and wind gusts in excess of 50 mph.
Tropical Storm Debby strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it approached Florida on Sunday evening, August 4, 2024 , with Hurricane Debby making landfall around 7 am near Steinhatchee, Florida in the Florida Big Bend with maximum winds around 80 mph (130 km/h).
While Central Florida was not in the direct path of the storm, Central Florida is experiencing heavy rain and wind gusts in excess of 50 mph.
Due to the current weather conditions, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park, Aquatica Orlando Water Park, and Island H20 Water Parks are all closed today due to the severe weather.
In addition to the two water parks, The Orlando Eye at ICON Park on I-Drive is temporarily closed also, plus Fun Spot in Kissimmeee and Olrando delayed opening today, and are planing to open at 2 pm.
A Tornado Watch is currently in effect until 4 pm for Volusia, Lake, Seminole, Orange, and Osceola counties, which includes Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, and International Drive.
Also, earlier today a Tornado Warning was issued for western Orange County near Walt Disney World Resort until 9:15 am. National Weather Service in Melbourne was tracking an area of weak rotation on radar, moving from near Bay Lake to Horizon West.
Hurricane Debby is the fourth named storm of what is expected to be a busy 2024 Atlantic hurricane season. following Tropical Storm Alberto, Hurricane Beryl and Tropical Storm Chris, all of which formed in June.
