Could Monsters, Inc. Land Door Coaster at Hollywood Studios be the world's first vertical lift suspended roller coaster?

A unprecedented amount of expansion and new projects across Walt Disney World Resort are on the way, but could one project be a groundbreaking new coaster design?

A brand-new land themed around Disney and Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.” is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort.

The news was shared during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, together with Disney Legend Billy Crystal, revealed plans to build a living, breathing, and not-at-all-scary Monsters-inspired area where you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters.

Picking up after the events of Pixar Animation Studios’ beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly. But it’s not a true visit without the factory itself. You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!

Yes, a door. If you’ve been dreaming of riding through the door vault since the movie was released in 2001, you’re not alone — Josh has been thinking about this, too.  “The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley,” he told the crowd. “You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”

The coaster will put you right in the middle of the monster action. Just be sure to fill out your paperwork! Roz is always watching…

The first-ever suspended coaster at a Disney park will put guests into the action as they race along for an adventure filled with laughs.

Work on the project is slated to begin in 2025, but what do we know about this new coaster?

To ideate the layout of the attraction, the project team have created a study model of the attraction, enabling them to fine-tune every detail, which you can see here.

The doors coaster could potentially be a groundbreaking attraction as it has potential to be the world's first vertical lift suspended roller coaster. This coaster is designed to run with four ride vehicles, each accommodating 10 riders from what we can see in the art work and ride model.

The operational flow of the coaster involves a unique system where two platforms facilitate the loading process of four ride vehicles. Once the first two trains on the first side of the platforms are loaded, they will ascend vertically.

Once the first two trains reach the top of the lift the first will be dispatched while a switch track redirects the second train for its departure. After the first two trains clears a designated section (Block Section), the empty lift section will return to the lower loading platform.

Simultaneously, the second platform will rise with trains 3 and 4, repeating the loading and dispatch sequence observed with trains 1 and 2. This dynamic ensures that two trains are navigating the coaster layout while the other two are loading meaning that the Doors Coater has an efficient constant flow of riders.

Notably, this coaster model deviates from the more traditional designs by omitting a classic lift hill and drop. Once dispatched from the upper lift section, the coaster seems to look like it operates more like a powered run away mine train similar to a Mack Rides Mine Train.

This option is to save space in the ride building adding more track layout making the coaster longer. And with it being a powered model the speed can be regulated to provide show elements throughout the attraction.

We also expect a mixture of physical set pieces, animatronics, and screens to be used within the show building.

For now this is an educated guess, and it will be fun to watch as as this project moves forward as to what the finished coaster will be.... Only time will tell!
